Super Sporty weekend of Feb. 4 and 5th

Fangtastic 5K on Saturday, Feb 4th:

Who wants to run/walk a 5K with the youth group?

We're pounding the pavement in honor of our friend Alex Cauthen. (Part of each registration fee goes to the Vanderbilt Children's Hospital.) The more the merrier, so let's get the whole church involved.

We're carpooling from VSCC at 8:30am on Saturday morning so we can arrive at the Nashville Arena in plenty of time to check-in, get our race chips and walk/run the Predators 5K. When we have conquered the event, we return to VSCC, get in our cars and go home to shower, eat, nap and/or do homework.

Teenagers will return to return to the church by 5pm. In one hour, we will set-up the fellowship hall for Room in the Inn and decorate the sanctuary for the Souperbowl of Caring. We will drive away from the church at 6pm on our way back downtown for the Predators hockey game.

The Preds game begins at 7pm and we want to get there in plenty of time to grab some food and get to our seats. After the game, everyone goes home! Woohoo!

(Miscellaneous weirdness: You must register for the 5K in advance. Your registration fee also includes a t-shirt and a ticket to the Saturday night hockey game. Teenagers must participate in the 5K to attend the hockey game with the group. School events are the exception. Parents and church members, if you would like to join us in the 5K, that would be terrific! Go ahead and register yourself. If you aren't interested in the 5K, but would like to join us for the hockey game, you can buy a discounted ticket when you register your teenager.)

Christmount All-Church Retreat (Dec. 29-Jan. 1)

Christmount All-Church Retreat (Dec. 29-Jan. 1) Ring in the New Year with a weekend retreat in the Smoky Mountains from December 29th-January 1st. It's our second year to head to the hills of Black Mountain, North Carolina with our Vine Street friends and family. We will be staying at Christmount which is the national camp and conference center for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). All the motel type rooms have two double beds, TV/Cable and a private bathroom. There are a number of rooms that are handicap accessible.

Itinerary: Knitting, puzzle making, eating, rocking by the fireplace, reading a good book, skiing, snowboarding, eating, tubing, visiting with friends, sleeping late, hiking, Biltmore Estate, eating, worship, laughing, homework, board games, drinking coffee, writing thank you notes AND a Wii Bowling tournament with fabulous prizes.
Dates and Time: Thursday, December 29- Sunday, January 1st. Arrive on Thursday or Friday at any time. Depart on Saturday or Sunday at any time.
Transportation: Drive/Ride with your family, Carpool with friends, for $25 ride on the rental van with teenagers
Housing Rates: Christmount room rates are amazing! Children under 21 are free with a parent. If there's one parent in the room with their children, the rate is only $46.00 a night. Two parents plus children = $57.00. If you need help figuring this out, call Hope.
Skiing/Snowboarding: Friday from 9-4:30 pm- Lift ticket:$44, Ski rental $15, Snowboard rental $29. Friday night from 6pm-10pm-Lift ticket $27, ski rental $15, snowboard rental $29.

Tubing Rates: Tubing is also available nearby.

FYI: The Youth Group is heading to Christmount on Thursday afternoon. They're skiing on Friday. Playing at Christmount on Saturday and heading back to Nashville on Sunday.

Not So Secret Santa

It's no secret that each year, we need a dozen nice people to each sponsor a backpack filled with lots of practical items for our 12 Room in the Inn guests. Our sponsors, referred to as "Secret Santas" make a donation toward the backpacks ($50 each) and the youth group goes shopping, fills the backpacks and delivers them to our Room in the Inn guests on Christmas Eve.

This year, is exactly the same and very different.

Same: We need nice people to sponsor our Room in the Inn guests. Our sponsors are referred to as "Secret Santas." The youth group will go shopping and deliver the gifts to our Room in the Inn guests.

Different: We need lots of nice people to each sponsor toiletry kits filled with lots of practical items for our 72 Room in the Inn guests. ($1,080 total) The youth group will fill the toiletry kits and volunteers will deliver them to our Room in the Inn guests in December and February.

It's no secret that our guests who are homeless have many needs.

Let's start this season by meeting a few of them...okay, Secret Santa?

Room in the Inn Begins November 13

At the end of an autumn or winter day, 12 of Nashville's homeless look to Vine Street for a hot meal, a warm bed and a safe place to spend the night. The next five days begin Sunday, November 13 and run through Friday, November 18.

We have the space – The Fellowship Hall. We have the beds. Now, all we need is you!

You can volunteer as a group and coordinate the night, or you can volunteer individually as a PM Van Driver, Greeter, Supper-Breakfast-or-Sack Lunch Preparer, one of 3 Overnighters, an AM Van Driver, or a Launderer.

Duties begin at 5:30 pm and end about 6:30 the next morning with each volunteer working their individual shift.

The Great Pumpkin Kitchen

When you awoke on the morning of November 6, 2011, the world appeared to be the same as it was whilst you slumbered, but something was very different. There was a cool breeze in the air; damp leaves clung to the streets and sidewalks, people lined up at the Pancake Pantry and SEC tailgaters headed to their grills and into the stadium. The seemingly typical fall day in Nashville included a strong scent billowing through the neighborhoods of Richland Park. It was unusual, yet familiar.

Rumor has it that the Great Pumpkin Kitchen emerged from the hallows of Vine Street Christian Church under the darkness of night. As dawn broke, a mound of deserted pumpkins was seen at the fellowship hall entryway. A diligent team of individuals, known as volunteers, scurried around cutting, scooping and baking the pile of pumpkins.

Within 24 hours, this overwhelming ministry project was complete. The Great Pumpkin was able to return home knowing that the people of Vine Street had gleaned and prepared enough pumpkin for hundreds of people to enjoy through the feeding ministry of Nashville Food Project (formerly Mobile Loaves and Fishes).

Campbell's UPCs

Christmount, the National Camp and Conference Center for the Christian Church, Disciples of Christ continues to collect Campbell UPCs. They are currently using points to order supplies for the camp and the office. Any points redeemed before the end of May will be counted as double points.

Remember to cut the UPC and the Labels for Education logo together. The collection can is in the church office hallway. Hope Hodnett will be taking our labels to Christmount at the end of March while she is attending a board meeting.

Spring Retreats at Bethany Hills

TNT Club Christmas Party December 18th

We will have a huge group of friends from the TNT Club gathering together for the annual Christmas party. We need LOTS of of volunteers to help this afternoon run smoothly. We will be greeting our guests, arranging presents, making lists, checking them twice and helping Santa pass out gifts.The party is from 2-3:30 pm.

We need volunteers from 1-4 pm.

The TNT Club is a community ministry with adults who have special needs. The TNT Club meets monthly in fellowship hall at Vine Street Christian Church.
