General Board of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)

Allison Ruari will attend the annual meeting of the General Board of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), February 9-12, in Indianapolis. Some of the responsibilities of the board include:

· Discerning a vision for the direction of the Church;

· Oversight of the mission funding system;

· Approving or confirming  nominees to general ministry boards;

· Receiving reports of the general ministries and the Office of General Minister and President; and

· Processing resolutions submitted for General Assembly.

Thank you for keeping these leaders in your prayers.

Ed Cole

Congratulations to Ed Cole, who was honored today with the 2018 Elizabeth Jacobs Distinguished Service Award by the Council on Aging: “Taking to heart COA’s mission to address unmet needs like assisted transportation for seniors who no longer drive, Ed Cole stepped up two years ago to form and chair COA’s Senior Transportation Leadership Coalition. Using his extensive network, Ed gathered public and private organizations to create a new volunteer ride program called Senior Ride Nashville. This affordable service pairs an older adult who needs transportation with a volunteer who provides a ride, a helping hand and friendly conversation. Ed has devoted hundreds of hours to coalition and COA board meetings, community outreach, and to personally giving rides. His enthusiasm and leadership have been vital in helping COA make our community more age-friendly.” Ed received the award at the 2018 Annual Meeting at The Temple, and several friends from Vine Street were happy to witness the special occasion and celebrate with Ed and Pat and a host of friends from across Nashville.

Thousand Oaks

“I am speechless and heartbroken,” said the father of 22-year-old Cody Coffman, one of at least thirteen victims of the mass shooting at a bar in Thousand Oaks, CA. We remember the victims, their families, and friends in our prayers. Speechless and heartbroken we pray for healing and determination to resist the culture of death in our nation.

Bill Brewer

Bill Brewer died on Wednesday from a heart attack. He was 60 years old. Shocked and saddened by his sudden death, we ask for prayers for all who love him, especially his children, Will and Natalie. A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 9th at 12:30 at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be prior to the service from 10:00-12:00.

The Helffenstein family

Stephen Moseley asks for our prayers for the Helffenstein family. Erik Helffenstein, 45, was killed Sunday night following individuals suspected of breaking into cars in the neighborhood. This tragic news has been hard on the neighbors, and particularly on Kyla and Quinn and other children. Quinn is good friends with Erik’s son, Sawyer. Thank you for your prayers for the family, the neighbors, and especially our children whose sense of safety has been assailed day after day.

Tree of Life

We remember in our prayers those who were murdered at Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh and all who love them. We pray for people in this country and around the world who visit houses of worship with fear - Jews, Christians, Muslims, Hindus, and followers of other sacred traditions. May God give them and us the courage to resist evil and fear.

David Sanderson

David Sanderson, the father of T.J. McLaughlin’s long-time friend, Andy, and the father-in-law of Katie’s sister, Kristin, passed away on Friday afternoon. Katie wrote, “It comes with some relief after his multi-year battle with ALS and Pick's Disease, but also with enormous sadness. Please hold his wife, Lisa, his son, Andy, daughter-in-law, Kristin, and grandchildren, Sam and Molly in prayer.” T.J. and Katie will travel to be with the family and attend the funeral once arrangements have been made. Thank you for your prayers for all who mourn David’s death.
