In one of their first decisions as the Central Committee for the World Council of Churches, the newly installed 150-member committee made history Friday by electing Dr Agnes Abuom of Nairobi, from the Anglican Church of Kenya, as the moderator of the highest WCC governing body. She is the first woman and African moderator of the Central Committee.

Miles Kleinert
At its annual meeting on October 25-26, the Board of Disciples of Christ Historical Society elected Miles Kleinert to serve on the Board for the 2014-16 term. Miles continues the legacy of Vine Street members who have served on this Board, beginning with founding member Eva Jean Wrather in 1941. However, Miles is the first ever member of any Christian Youth Fellowship to be elected. Congratulations!
Leslie Carson
Leslie Carson's grandmother, Willie Lou Wages, died this week in Buford, GA. She was nearly 99 years old. Thank you for your prayers for her family.
World Council of Churches
The World Council of Churches will gather for its 10th assembly in Busan, Republic of Korea, from October 30 to November 8.
The assembly theme, “God of life, lead us to justice and peace” provides a focus for theological reflection, worship and meditation, as well as for planning programmatic activities before, during and after the assembly.
Among the countless delegates and guests from around the world will be our own Gary Holloway, Executive Director of World Convention, as well as General Minister and President Sharon Watkins and the President of the Council on Christian Unity Robert Welsh from Indianapolis. We pray for safe travel and a fruitful assembly for all!

Amy Gopp leaving Week of Compassion
It is with joy and sadness that Week of Compassion announces that The Reverend Amy Gopp will join Church World Service Global (CWS) as Director of Member Relations and Pastoral Care in January 2014. As Executive Director of Week of Compassion, Amy has been a passionate advocate for those displaced by disasters, made refugees by violent conflict, and those working for economic empowerment and development in their communities. Her work with multiple partner organizations and with countless Disciples congregations and ministries has had significant impact during her tenure at Week of Compassion.
Amy’s responsibilities at CWS will be focused on three areas of work: discernment and leadership for the Eastern Europe program work, engaging and promoting CWS with member communions and other potential members, and engaging with human resource teams to provide pastoral counseling to CWS colleagues and staff around the world.
May God continue to bless you in your ministry, Amy!

Prayer concerns
Pat Bentrup's sister-in-law, Teresa Boyd, has cancer and is currently exploring treatment options with her physicians.
Josh Cauthen will leave on Friday for work as a Fulbright/Clinton scholar in Malawi. He will be there for 10 months. We celebrate this accomplishment and pray for a safe and successful stay.
Charlie Biter is looking forward to holding daughter Annie's first child. Her due date is in March.
Sara Tarpley is looking forward to having her very first local granddaughter next year!
Jan Volck's friend, Gabriella Mittlestaedt passed away last week. Thank you for your prayers for her family and friends.
Monday night, Vine Street hosted a group of Immokalee farm workers. It was good to share dinner and prayers with them, and many Nashville friends joined them for a vigil at our neighborhood Publix store. We pray for a safe journey home for them and for success in their quest for better work conditions and wages.

Rita Brandon traveled to Ohio for the funeral of her father-in-law, John Brandon, Sr. Rita and her husband John just moved back to Nashville a few months ago, after her husband's retirement. Monday update
Walter Seifert was 2013 recipient of the "Andrew Jackson Medal" awarded for "notably distinguished service in the cause of Freemasonry, Humanity and Country". The medal was presented during the 199th Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of Free & Accepted Masons of Tennessee, which has 330 subordinate Lodges with total membership of forty two thousand . Walter has been a Mason for fifty five years and has served as Grand Historian since 2008. Congratulations, Walter! Bob Faires, the father of our former intern, Diane Faires, had knee replacecment surgery in Nashville on August 23. Everything went well and went back home to Clarksville on Sunday! Steve Reed’s grandmother, Gladys Heier (sp?) is 99 years old, and her strength is declining. The family asks for our prayers for her and her daughter, Madeline, Steve’s mother, who is taking care of her. We continue to remember the peoples of Syria and Egypt in our prayers, and ask for God's guidance and wisdom for all who make decisions about their future.
