Shelbyville and Murfreesboro
Rev. Kyle Harris, interim pastor at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Shelbyville, asks that we join First Christian in praying for peaceful demonstrations and peace-filled relationships this weekend. Rev. Harris’ request comes as Shelbyville and Murfreesboro brace for white supremacist rallies this weekend—events that have been on the mind of our Thomas Kleinert, who shared related insights on his blog this week.
Saturday Prayers
Our prayers of support go out to Buddy Barnes and his family. Sam Mosier, the husband of Martha Mosier, Buddy’s sister, died Wednesday in Chattanooga after a long illness. The funeral is set for Sunday, Oct. 22 in Chattanooga. The obituary is posted here.
We offer, too, prayers for traveling mercies on behalf of our Fellowship of Twelve. Many of them are in Kentucky this weekend visiting Cane Ridge, a key historical site of our denominational tradition. Fellowship members include Alice Cannon, Joyce Crowell, Melanie Gao, Jackie Halstead, Erica Hayden, Johanna Keith, Bob Lyons, Malinda Moseley, Kennedy Shuler, Helen Trabue, Kara Reed and Thomas Kleinert.
David Tarpley
David Tarpley had hip replacement surgery Friday. We're grateful to know he is now home, and all signs are pointing to a successful procedure. We pray for his continued healing. (Previously, Greg reported knee surgery, in error. Sorry for the confusion.)
Ellen McLaughlin
Ellen McLaughlin will have surgery Monday to have her tonsils removed. We pray for Ellen, along with her parents Katie & T.J. and brother, Jack, for God’s healing presence.
Michael Lee
Sondra and Ted Lee ask for our prayers for their son, Michael. You may recall Michael has been dealing with leukemia. Recently, doctors determined he will need to have additional treatments, so soon he will be spending several days in an Atlanta hospital to receive it. We offer prayers for Michael and his physical healing. Also, we pray for the mental and spiritual wellbeing of Michael and his family as they share this experience.
Linda Parker
Please continue to surround Linda with your love and prayers. She is going through chemo right now, and it's almost too much to bear. For those of you who don't know her, Linda Parker is Kennedy's mom, and she is one of Vine Street's former ministers; she lives and serves in Indiana.
Jack Wallace and Joanne Jewett
We thought we would only be sharing service arrangements for Joanne's mother, Joan Jewett today. But on Thursday night, Jack's sister Rosemary died. Please see the note he posted earlier today, and keep this family in your prayers:
It has been a week filled with loss and sadness for Joanne and me.
On Wednesday Joanne's mother passed away at age 89. Joan Jewett lived with us for the past five years as her dementia increased, and six months ago moved into Alive Hospice as she became too frail for us to provide care for her in our home. We miss her, but we feel some sense of relief that she no longer suffers.
For our Nashville friends, visitation is tonight at Marshall-Donnelly from 4 - 7 PM. We will have a grave-side service for Joan on Monday with just family.
Yesterday morning I learned that my sweet sister Rosemary died in her sleep Thursday night. We are in shock over this. Rosie turned sixty last month, had just retired from her career as a nurse, including several years at St. Thomas in Nashville, and was looking forward to spending time with her husband Joel Edwards, her sons Carey and Shawn, and her five grandchildren, all who lived near her in Columbus, Mississippi. Joanne and I will travel there on Sunday to be with them and say goodby to Rosie at her funeral at Vibrant Church at 3PM.
Please remember her children and grandchildren, her siblings and their spouses - Jim and Bev Wallace, Jerry and Margie McNall, Joanne and me, Jeff Wallace, Joe and Carla Wallace - in your thoughts and prayers. We will miss her so much.
Linda Raintree
Judi Sachs asks for prayers for the family and friends of Linda Raintree. Linda died Oct. 4. May God be especially near these folks, along with all who watch or weep or mourn this day.
Joanne Jewett
Joanne Jewett and Jack Wallace are mourning the loss of Joanne's mother who died earlier today. We will share visitation arrangements once they have been confirmed. Thank you for remembering Joanne and the family in your prayers.
Lester McNatt
We ask for prayers for Lester and all who love Martha McNatt, Lester's aunt, who died Sunday morning at age 90. Her funeral will be on Tuesday in Jackson, TN, where she had been a long-time member of the First Christian Church.
Martha McNatt
Lester McNatt asks for prayers for his aunt, Martha McNatt who broke her shoulder and foot. She is currently hospitalized in Jackson, TN and will be moved to an assisted care facility when she is able.
Burnette Chapel Church of Christ
On behalf of the elders and the congregation, Thomas Kleinert and Martha Bishop sent a letter today to Burnette Chapel Church of Christ. Thank you for your prayers.
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
Amid the shock and pain caused by the violent attack on your congregation last Sunday, we are praying for you. Our hearts are broken as are yours, and we ask for God’s abundant grace to bring comfort and healing to all, especially the victims and their families.
We remember Melanie Smith and all who love her, especially her children. We remember your minister, Joey Spann and his wife, Peggy, and pray for their recovery. We remember Linda Bush, Donald William, Marlene Jenkins, Catherine Dickerson, and the brave Caleb Engle, praying that the Lord may heal them in body and soul, so that all of you together may continue your witness and ministry.
“See that none of you repays evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to all,” the Apostle Paul wrote in 1 Thessalonians 5:15. May God grant us strength to proclaim his mercy and love amid the hatred and violence of these days.
Rev. Dr. Christal Williams
Our regional minister, Rev. Dr. Christal Williams, is battling pneumonia. Thank you for remembering her in your prayers.
Update: Lucy Clendenin
Julia Callaway expresses her gratitude for the prayers and kind words folks have offered following the death of her mother, Lucy Clendenin. Meanwhile, arrangements have been made: Lucy's body will be cremated and a graveside service will be held in Statesville, North Carolina on Oct. 3. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Week of Compassion hurricane relief efforts.
Paula Potter
Sue Puckett, the mother of Paula Potter, called to ask for prayers for their family. Paula had surgery on Thursday morning at the Sarah Cannon Cancer Center at Centennial Medical Center. Paula and Sue have been part of our TNT Club for a very long time.
Lucy Clendenin
We prayerfully join Julia Callaway in grieving the death of her mother, Lucy Clendenin. Lucy died early this morning, on the heels of her 96th birthday. Arrangements are pending. May God’s presence be with Julia and all who love Lucy.
Emily Crenshaw
Emily Crenshaw leaves Thursday for two years to serve in the Peace Corps. After training, her work will take her to Ukraine. We wish Emily well! And we begin to offer prayers on her behalf while she is away from us.
Emily Smith
Emily Smith has learned she has a chipped ankle. She will need to take it easy for a while. Please keep her in your prayers, along with Roy (as he continues his own recovery) and with Amanda and Alec Miller, who are providing care.
Lord, Hear Our Prayers
Please keep in your prayers Helen Trabue, who has been dealing with unexplained pain. We pray for God’s wisdom as she works with doctors. Be mindful, too, of Roy Smith, who continues to receive rehab care. We pray, finally, for all those who are in need of healing and comfort.
You’ve heard about the new Fellowship of Twelve group, a leadership development opportunity, which met for the first time Aug. 27. As another step forward in our intentional ministry plan called “Living Our Call,” we pray for Alice Cannon, Joyce Crowell, Melanie Gao, Jackie Halstead, Johanna Keith, Bob Lyons, Malinda Moseley, Kennedy Shuler, Helen Trabue, Kara Reed and Thomas Kleinert.
Prayers and donations are being offered on behalf of Hurricane Harvey victims. Please consider making a donation to Week of Compassion or to a relief agency of your choice. Rev. Terri Hord Owens, Disciples’ general minister and president and Vy Nguyen, Week of Compassion executive director, share this insight to the aftermath of Harvey.
