Prayer concerns

Mary Frances Tallent died peacefully on Monday morning, February 21, 2011; she was 94 years old. We remember in our prayers her children and their families, and all who love her. Visitation will be on Saturday morning, February 26, at 10am at Vine Street Christian Church, followed by the funeral service at 11am. Click here for obituary

Jack Forstman will undergo further tests this week, but will almost certainly have heart valve replacement surgery very soon. We had all hoped that the episodes of arrhythmia he had experienced could be treated with medication. Thank you for remembering him and Shirley and their family in your prayers.

Julia Keith asks for prayers for her step-mom, Mary Kathryn, who is healing from a broken hip; Julia's sister, Beverly is having health problems as well.

A year ago, on February 17, 2010, Steve Lowry was in a serious car accident; he suffered multiple serious injuries. We are grateful for his healing, and with him we look forward to the day when he will pick up and play his guitar again.

Ruth Skinner

Ruth fell and broke her right wrist last weekend.  She is right handed.  She will not be able to drive for a couple of weeks and will have to wear a splint for about 6 weeks.

Update

Orlan Lorton, father of Helen Trabue and Malinda Moseley, fell on Monday and broke his right knee cap. He is having surgery today to replace the fractured cap (Tuesday).

Howard Evans was discharged from Centennial on Monday, and he continues his recovery at home.

Mary Frances Tallent is now a resident at Alive Hospice at St. Thomas hospital.

Here's an update from Helen about her dad's knee surgery:

The surgery went well. They wired the kneecap back together. He is doing well this morning and they will get him up and moving sometime today. He will be able to go home Friday. He will have to go back in a year to get the wire removed and reassess things.



Prayers for MaryAnn Johnson & Family

George McCasland, the brother of MaryAnn Johnson, died this week at the age of 80. He lived in Philadelphia, PA where he was still teaching at Philadelphia Community College. During the Christmas break he visited Paul and Mary Ann in Colorado and his son in California. We send our prayers to his family.

Phoebe asks for prayers for her brother; he is having serious health problems.

Evelyn Powell

Many of you will have heard the very sad news that Evelyn's body was found Thursday morning about a block away from her home. She may have become confused during the heavy snowfall on Wednesday; her neighbors called police after finding her beagle mix dog wandering the neighborhood Thursday morning. Howard's recovery continues to go well. He may be able to go home tomorrow!

Norma Warren

Norma's surgery went well. She will get lab results in a few days. Please continue to hold her in your prayers.

Monday update

Norma Warren is having outpatient surgery today to remove a malignancy in her breast. Please keep her and Mitch in your prayers.

Rachel Dixon's father, Bob Register, is recovering at home after vascular surgery last week.

Leonard Zonn, the 3-year-old son of friends of Rachel Dixon's, had brain surgery on Thursday, and we pray for his full recovery.

We are grateful that Kathy Berhow's mother is doing much better.

Margaret Netterville was in worship yesterday for the first time after long weeks of recovery. We are grateful that she is able to put weight on her foot again and go out.

The Stauffer Family

Jean Stauffer, mother of Roy Stauffer and grandmother of Clay Stauffer, passed away February 2, 2011 at the age of 99, in Florida.  Roy and Clay are ministers at Woodmont Christian Church in Nashville. Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday February 8, 2011 in Florida.  We ask that you keep the Stauffer family in your prayers during their time of bereavement.

Frieda Coleman

Frieda Coleman's brother died suddenly in Eugene, Oregon on January 17, 2011.  She asked that you remember her family in your prayers.

Howard Evans

Howard Evans learned recently that he has stomach cancer. He will have surgery on Tuesday, February 1, during which his stomach will be removed. Howard is in good overall health, but this is still a difficult procedure, and the recovery time is expected to be days and weeks, rather than hours and days. We ask for your prayers for Howard and all who love him, and for the surgeon and other medical workers.

Suzi Cummins died

Suzi Cummins passed away on January 17 after a long battle with liver cancer. She was the wife of Duane Cummins, former president of the Disciples Historical Society in Nashville. A memorial service is planned for Feb 25, 11:00am, at Bethany Memorial Church. Memorial gifts may be sent to the Suzi Cummins Scholarship Fund at Bethany College.

Haiti

At 4:53pm on January 12, 2010, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake rocked Port au Prince and the surrounding areas, killing hundreds of thousands and leaving nearly a million more homeless, hurting and in need.

Over 80% of Haitians lived in poverty prior to the earthquake; now the nation faces even deeper economic and health challenges. Millions have no access to the most basic elements for health and survival. Many lost everything, and a year later still have nothing.

Haiti has since suffered a hurricane and is battling a deadly and fast-moving cholera outbreak. Hundreds of thousands are displaced, living in makeshift tent cities. Over a million are displaced, living in makeshift tent cities. Work, money, clean water and health care are scarce. We pray that the plight of our Haitian neighbors will not be forgotten. Prayer requests and updates

Catherine Adams died peacefully, early yesterday morning.  Her family will hold a small service for her in Indiana this week.  

We continue to pray for Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and her family, those who were injured, and the families of those who were killed in the attack outside a Tucson grocery story on Saturday, January 8.

Wayne, Pam, and Savannah Lyle welcome a temporary addition to their family: Nathalie Schmidt is an exchange student from Germany; she is 16 and a student at Hillsboro High.

John Cauthen is mourning the death of his cousin, Bill Foster.

Prayer for the Bussey Family

Linda Bussey's father-in-law, Al Bussey, had one of his lungs removed in 2009 due to cancer.  Over the recent holidays he experienced chest pains and new spots were found in his remaining lung.  His doctor is currently treating him with antibiotics, hoping the spots are caused by infection, and will conduct follow-up tests on January 6th.  (Linda is a Vine Street staff member.)

Two requests

Juanita Malone, a dear friend of Helen Trabue and Malinda Moseley’s (they have known her since fourth grade), is on dialysis waiting for a kidney transplant. Her blood type makes finding a donor difficult.

Frank Huffman, Helen and Malinda’s uncle, has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Jack Forstman

Jack has been at St. Thomas since early Wednesday morning. Preliminary tests point to heart fibrillation as the likely cause of the terrible dizziness he experienced. Please keep Jack and Shirley in your prayers.

Wayne Parks and family

Wayne Parks's 84 year old mother, Edith, died peacefully in her sleep early Tuesday morning.  Her health had been declining in recent months.  She leaves behind her husband of 63 years, Gene (their 64th would have been celebrated on January 7th, 2011), children Connie and Wayne, and four grandchildren.  Her memorial service will be on Monday, December 27 at First Christian Church (DOC) in Richmond, Kentucky.

Reeta says, "We are all doing well but will miss her.  She was a sweetheart."
